midi keyboards are an essential tool for music producers if you're just getting started with music production then it's important to learn how to get the most out of them in this video I'll show you the basics of using midi keyboard but for a detailed look check out my article that I've included in the description below firstly it's important to know what a midi keyboard can't do midi keyboards can't make noises by themselves all they do is send instructions to a connected device like a computer or Hardware instrument to tell it what to do with that said let's look at what they can do controlling a virtual instrument the most common use for a midi keyboard is to control the virtual instrument in a digital audio workstation or Daw to do this connect your midi keyboard to your PC next open up your DAW and make sure that your midi keyboard is set up as an active device then add your desired instrument and make sure that it's all set up and activate the track also called arming the track now you can use your midi keyboard to control the virtual instrument you can use this to record or even perform live controlling a hardware instrument next let's take a look at controlling a physical instrument like before make sure that your midi keyboard is connected to your PC and set up with a new Daw then connect your Hardware instrument to your PC using a midi interface Now set the output of your Dow to the midi interface now you can use your midi keyboard to control the sound of the physical instrument the biggest benefit for this is controlling multiple different instruments across a live or Studio setting or controlling instruments with tricky Keys like this synth here controlling a dow finally let's look at some of the additional controls on this midi keyboard to control my Daw further by mapping these knobs I can remotely control the different settings in my Daw giving me a more intuitive experience in some Dows like this one you'll need to make sure that you've turned remote to on within your Daw there'll be an option to map or learn midi click this button then click the control that you want to map for example I'll be mapping the envelope on this filter next turn the knob that you want to be the control on your midi keyboard now you'll see that I can use this knob to turn the envelope up or down as you can imagine there's a wide range of possibilities that can be done with this the best way to learn is to take some time and explore for yourself for more info on how to use a midi keyboard check out my article below ...
