hi everyone I'm Josh and this is Joshua a on TV today's episode is dedicated to Scott and he asked how can I find a good piano teacher this is a great question and it's a tough question actually a lot of people say I'm gonna be self-taught from YouTube videos and well I make a lot of youtube videos to help people in their self instruction as well as to supplement regular lessons but I think that you should always try to find a teacher I've I've made videos on this before but I do think a teacher is invaluable in your development piano is so difficult there's so much going on there that I really do feel like you do need a good teacher now how do you know where a good teacher is you should usually go with the best teacher you can afford it's not always the case that more expensive teachers are better but if you can afford a university teacher for instance they're going to be charging a lot more than maybe the sweet little old lady down the street that's teaching you how to play a church hymn you know what I mean and that's totally a stereotype so I apologize but my grandma was one of those sweet old ladies and she was actually really really fine teacher but she took lessons from a neighborhood teacher growing up and and then she took some jazz lessons from a pretty well-known jazz pianist and just became a great teacher that helped people get a solid foundation for love of music basics and technique really good at helping students how to note read but beyond that she said you know I need you to go to somebody else when I got to age 9 or 10 I was practicing hours a day and she said you know you do need to graduate on to a different teacher so that's when I went to my teacher up the University of Utah she luckily took me on as a student Susan Domeier she's amazing I owe so much to her but how how can you go on to find a teacher in your area the first thing I would do is look at the local universities and maybe call the very best teacher at the University so and the way you can know the best teacher is you can ask around in the community and sometimes people will say oh yes this person is the most at the University he's kind of like the star teacher he has the best students or whatever and and maybe you give that person a call now most likely they're not going to be taking on beginners or intermediate if you're an advanced student maybe they'll take you on I'm kind of weird I actually take on beginners all the time adult beginners I can't I'm not great with little kids like five and six-year-olds but I have quite a few adult beginners that I teach on skype and I love it but a lot of university teachers won't do that so ask them say if you don't have if I would love to audition for you but if you don't have any room could you suggest the best local teachers in the community that would be my very best suggestion the other resource you could tap into is your local music teachers Association so there's something called the MTN a music teachers national association and I belonged to it for a few years and when my students want to compete I read join up there's something called Utah music teachers - all right sorry Utah music teachers Association um TA and they also have a lot of like a lot of like even just beginner teachers sometimes join up to those it's a really great sense of community they hold conferences they hold master classes they hold competitions it's wonderful it's a great organization I really respect what they do you may call the president of the you of the local one so if here in Minnesota will probably be the MMT a Minnesota music Teachers Association you can call the president of that and say I'm looking for a teacher I was wondering if you could tell me who is the most prominent in the community who has competition winners or any teachers you've heard good things about and go about that way now music is a very how should I say this without sounding mean it's kind of a sticky situation feelings can get hurt very easily and I hate this about the music culture and a lot of people are doing a lot to change this but teachers get very protective of their students because that's their income and that's their livelihood I've always been of the mentality that I want to do what's best for my student and I have sent many students to different teachers I'm a very experienced teacher I've taught very high-level students I teach at the University but I realize I'm not the best teacher for everybody and so don't be afraid if things are not going well like if you audition with a new teacher and they're like eh now we need to start if they have a really good reputation I would definitely give that a chance but if things aren't going well don't be afraid to say hey I I need to go a different direction you know it's sad when that happens either for the teacher or the students sometimes it's great both they're celebrating because neither got along with each other but for the most part there's usually one of the parties are savvy that the teacher is sad to lose the student or the student or the teacher doesn't have room to take the student anymore but always ask the best teachers for referrals that's where I would start and then you can search online for a teacher as well I've certainly built a pretty big studio just through my youtube channel people are like hey I like your style can we do some lessons and so that's worked out beautifully I love it I love teaching students from all over the world and I also it's gotten to the point where sometimes I can't take on a new students sometimes I can it just depends on the influx of my University schedule but I have like my little brother teaches on skype my little sister teaches on skype my little sister studying with me at the University and my little brother studied with my previous teacher Susan Domeier at the University one of my previous students aged a long he teaches on skype he really loves it so I have a lot of referrals if any of you do need an online teacher if you simply cannot find a local teacher in your area let me know if I have room I'll do my best if if I don't I will refer you to one of them I trust each of them completely with beginner intermediate and early advanced students so I hope this video has provided some helpful information don't forget that subscribe button if this has been helpful or if you'd like to see more videos like this please also feel free to submit any future video requests to Josh at Josh right piano comm so you see a subscribe button a button here to view all of my lessons that I have on my website and then you can keep watching more videos over here have a great week good luck in your practice sessions ...
