a C major scale represents the first important step in securing a good piano technique this is why I'm choosing to share some ideas with you today to help you achieve a successful C major scale which should give you a solid technical Foundation to build upon [Music] first of all I want you to find middle C on the piano see how it is located at the center of the keyboard the white note to the left hand side of the two black notes make sure that you are sitting in an upright position on the front end of the piano stool and place your arm in line with the keys then let's think about your hand position see how the hand is slightly curved with a Natural Bridge to achieve this position it is sometimes helpful to imagine that you are holding a tennis ball or an apple or alternatively you can put your hand over your knee to get the position you need you can then transfer this position onto the piano your keyboard and then by flattening slightly you should hopefully achieve an ideal hand position be careful not to tense up the hand while you achieving this position you will be attempting to move from middle C to the next C an octave higher the best way of fingering this is to divide your hand into two play the first three notes with one two and three gradually bringing your thumb under so that it is ready to play the F and allow you to have enough Fingers 1 2 3 4 and five to ascend to the highest point of the [Music] scale try to play with firm fingers supported by a relaxed arm and wrist be careful to avoid poking your fingers at the keys connect your fingers with a brief [Music] overlap press firmly into the keys using your natural arm weight pushing gently from the elbow or shoulder depending on your individual preference always remember your relaxed and supportive arm and wrist which will help you to warm up your sound quality when playing each note as you gradually become more confident with your notes and fingerings you can begin to think of achieving some natural rise and fall as you move up and down the [Music] keyboard you can achieve these small gradations of Sound by altering the speed of attack when hitting the keys [Music] that is if you hit a note quickly then you will produce a brighter sound hit it more slowly and the sound will be slightly [Music] softer don't forget the slight overlap joining of the notes you can also listen to your sounds and match them in your head so as to avoid percussive playing [Music] this will also help you to give your scale a natural sense of direction set a sensible Tempo or speed you can initially use a metronome if you like making sure that all of your notes are played evenly and at the same length [Music] then gradually increase your speed as you become more [Music] confident in conclusion remember your seating position hand position [Music] fingering the sound quality and its smooth delivery [Music] the shape and the rise and fall [Music] Direction and [Music] Tempo when you have mastered all of these elements you should hopefully be able to achieve your C major scale very effectively whilst improving your overall piano technique ...
